David Gray Plymouth ArtistDavid Gray has been painting for nearly 50 years, principally landscapes and still life and more recently portraits. He was born in Dublin but grew up and was educated in Glasgow where he attended Saturday morning classes and then evening classes at the Glasgow School of Art. During a varied career, David spent 14 years in the Royal Navy which provided plenty of inspiration for his work; from the West Indies to the Middle East and Gibraltar. He studied with Robert Lenkiewicz for 18 months in Plymouth after leaving the Navy.

David has had several solo exhibitions in Plymouth and sales from his works now reside as well as in the UK in Canada, USA, Australia, Spain, Ireland and even China when a couple from the visiting Chinese Circus bought a painting to take home! His exhibition of Plymouth Allotments was opened by Councillor Peter Smith of Parks and Leisure on Plymouth City Council. This exhibition as with others was very successful.

Since retiring David has taken the opportunity to travel and has toured through Russia and Eastern Europe overland which resulted in a group of paintings depicting especially the vast Russian countryside. In 2013 he and Lynn toured Arizona and Nevada is the USA and again in 2015 they revisited Arizona and Nevada and New Mexico. They loved New Mexico especially and again David was inspired by the scenery. They visited the east coast of Spain and loved the landscape that inspired Dali. A visit to the Fontainebleau Forest region of France where some of the Impressionists painted also inspired David.

David has exhibited at galleries on The Barbican in Plymouth, ECSA Gallery in Polperro in Cornwall and The Wharf in Tavistock three times. He also had paintings exhibited in a joint exhibition in Finland and at Brimpts Farm, a Conference Centre at Dartmeet. An illustrated biography on David and his art was published in November 2010 by Garage Press.
